In the early 80's John Sykes was a construction worker by day and guitarist by night. He suddenly realized that music was his calling and joined his first real band The Tygers of Pan Tang. A vacancy opened for the second lead spot in Thin Lizzy and John was asked to join. John's guitar playing was featured on Thin Lizzy's last record "Thunder and Lighting". Whitesnake founder/vocalist David Coverdale asked John to join his band after the demise of Thin Lizzy. Whitesnakes 1987 release featured some of the most explosive guitar riffs since Van Halen 1 and set a new standard for commercial hard rock guitarists. John Sykes has continued his success taking over vocal duties for a revamped Thin Lizzy Lineup.
A 80-as évek elején John Sykes építőmunkás volt napközben és gitáros esténként.Hamar rájött, hogy a zene a hivatása beszált első igazi bandájába a The Tygers of Pan Tang-be. Egy üresedés miatt lehetőséget kapott a Thin Lizzy-ben. John gitárjátékát hallhatjuk a Thin Lizzy "Thunder and Lighting" című albumán.
